I had another intern at my department today so i taughther how to serach for reports and how to work the front window, and how to send faxes. later on i had worked at the front desk helping the customers. iasked them if was and accident or incident and what the report number was. i then searched for it and printed it out to give them. they paid for it and i gave them their change back.we got a customer today who wanted all the reports for her address, but there were so many that there was a research fee of fifteen dollars so she started a big argument. i had to get the sergeant to settle this problem. today was the last day of internship for me. it was a great learning experience and i really enjoyed it.

Internship Reflection # 10 April 22, 2009
Today when I got into the police station it was 7:30. I first went into the patrol department. When I got in there a lady asked me what police officer I wanted to do the ride along with. I told her the officer's name, it was a friend of the family. then she sent him an email to his police car asking him if he would do the ride along. then she sent me to the sergeant and he set it up for me. within a half hour the officer came to pick me up and we were on are way. he told me what we were going to do for the day. first we went over to meet another officer that was doing a detail. then we headed over to a sub station because he had to meet with his lieutenant. after that we drove around for a little while and then we got a call over the radio. the officer put the sirens and lights on and we started racing through traffic. it was a domestic disturbance. a women and her boyfriend had been arguing, but by the time we got there he had left. while i was in the police car he showed me how to run a person's license plate, how to look up someones record, and i got to see how you receive dispatches on your computer. when he got dispatched to a location, the address and all the information popped up on his computer screen. he also showed me what the buttons in the police car do. after that we got another call over the radio, it was a guy complainning abouty his neighbor leaving food all on his sidewalk which was causing rodents. so we went over to talk to him about the cituation. then for a while it was quite so we were just driving. we had to keep stopping at the sub station a few times. Then we went to lunch and i met up with officers from the BCI department. they asked me if i wanted to go see some pictures of people who had been murdered, committed suicide etc. so the officer brought me into the police station to the BCI department. at first the pictures wernt bothering me. then after seeing almost all the photo's i had almost passed out because they were so nasty. Bodies were just burnt, stabbed, shot dozens of times, a person who had jumped off a 14 story building and someone who jumped in front of a train etc. these photos were so horrible. after that we went back in the car and started to patrol the neighborhood again. we got two more calls over the radio one was a lady who had called because a house next to her was robbed and there was a bag of stolen items in her yard that she wanted to report in. the last call was a traffic accident at the stop and shop on manton ave. when we got there he showed me what information you have to get from the people and how you have to take the reports. you need there name, addresses, car vin number, insurance policy numbers, date of birth, time of the accident, and the date etc. he had to give the driver of one of the cars a citation for not having insurance . at the end of the day he brought me back to the police station and i was done. I learned a lot of good information today and I had fun. I think the job is pretty cool except for the photos.

Internship Reflection # 9 April 8, 2009
Today I got into the police department at 7:30. When I first got in I was talking to the police officer in the front at the metal detector. He told me a lot about the job. He was also asking me about what I was going to do for my project and why I wanted to be a police officer. Then at 8:00 I went into the records bureau. The clerk put me at a desk and logged me onto the computer and opened up the programs that I was going to be using with their name and passwords. Then I was talking to the sergeant of my department and she asked me if I wanted to do a ride along instead of working in records. She went and got me a copy of the ride along application and gave it to me to fill out. I filled it out and gave it to the patrol department. The next week that I come I will be doing the ride along. Then after that, one clerk gave me some report requests from progressive. I had to search for them and print them out. After that I had to fax them over to progressive. While there was nothing to do I went through the computer system. I browsed through new reports and records. I looked through the global search, case search, and incident search. There were some cool reports. Then I had to answer phones, I asked people if it was an accident or incident. When they told me, I searched for it, when I found it I told them if it was ready and what time to come pick it up. If it wasn’t ready I told them to check back in a day. Later on I had to work at the front window. I attended to a lot of customers, some were very nice and some were rude. I first asked them if it was an accident or incident and them I asked for their report number. When they gave it to me I looked it up. I had to look in three programs. Sometimes I needed to see their license because there was a juvenile involved and they also had to have their kids birth certificate. I then printed the report out. They paid me the money and I gave them their change back and the report. Some people didn’t have all this information so they were mad because they had to go get it and come all the way back. I did this for most of the day. Today was interesting and very busy. I am excited about doing the ride along next week. It will be fun to go on calls to different cases and to see basically what the job is like.

Today I got to the police station at 7:30. There was an officer in the front checking people with a metal detector. I talked to him about his job. I was able to ask him a few questions. I also was observing how he did his job and how he communicated with people. Then after that I went into the records department. When I got in there it was 8:00. I was signed into a computer by one of the clerks. She opened the three report searching programs with her password. Then she gave me two papers from progressive. They were requests for reports. I had to search for them. When I found them I printed them out and faxed them over to progressive. I had to save the top sheet of the report and put it in a folder. The rest of the report went in the trash. I then had to answer phones and look up peoples reports. If they were ready I told them what time they could come down and pick them up. If they weren’t ready I told them that it wasn’t ready and to check back in a day or two. I got a few people who called that were very rude and also were yelling so I told them to stop and talk to me the right way or I was hanging up. Then they were more respectful, you cant let people get loud with you. You have to speak up and tell them to stop or call back later. When I got bored and there was not much to do I went into different programs and seen what they were about. I also looked up some reports in the computer system. There were a lot of interesting reports and a lot of crash reports that happened today. Then later on I had to work at the front window. There were a lot of customers today and I attended to a lot of them for all different kinds of reports. When they came I asked if it was an accident or other. Then they gave me either their report number, last name, date, or street location. When I found it I knew how much it was. I told the person how much it was and they paid for it and I gave them their change. Then I printed it out and gave it to them. If it wasn’t in the system or it wasn’t ready yet I told them to come back in a few days. I had to look through three programs in our computer system to find some reports. That’s what I did for most of the day. Then I had to run a few errands for the clerk up to the second and third floor. Today was a very busy day.

· Column Letter: Columns run vertically on a worksheet and each one is identified by a letter in the column header. It is located over row 1 in the worksheet.
· Formula Bar: Located above the worksheet, this area displays the contents of the active cell. It can also be used for entering or editing data and formulas.
· Name box: Located next to the formula bar, the Name Box displays the cell reference or the name of the active cell. It is used to assign names to cells or ranges of cells.
· Row Number: Rows run horizontally in an Excel 2007 worksheet and are identified by a number in the row header.
· Sheet Tab: When trying to switch between worksheets in an Excel 2007 file you have to click on the sheet tab at the bottom of the screen.
· Office Button: when you click on the Office Button it displays a drop down menu that contains a number of options, such as open, save, and print. The options in the Office Button menu are very similar to those found under the File menu in previous versions of Excel.
· Ribbon: The Ribbon is the strip of buttons and icons located on top of the work area in Excel 2007. The Ribbon replaces the menus and toolbars found in previous versions of Excel.

today when i came in i went to the records department. i was signed on to a computer by the clerk. she opened the accident, incident, and case search programs for me. the lady from ors came in to observe how i was working and what i was doing. thw morning was kind of slow. after a while it picked up up and i had to answer the phone and look up reports to see if they were ready. i also had to give directions to one lady on how to get to the police station.i watched the clerks do their jobs and how they attended to customers at the window. then later on i went and worked at the front window. when the customers came in i asked them if it was an accident or other. then i took their report numbers and searched for the report. if they didnt have a report number they gave me their last name, the date it happened, or the street location. then when i found the report, i seen if it was ready and if it was i pressed print and then it told me how many pages it was. i knew how much it cost, i asked them for the money then i gave them their change back and the report. i had to look through three different systems to find the reports sometimes. while their was nothing to do i browsed through recent reports and records. there was a lot of recent crash reports. i had to send some people back to the front window because they came to the wrong department or if they had a problem that we couldnt solve. i also had to ask for peoples licenses to see if it was them and to put their information into the computer. around 11:00 it got busier and their was more work to do. i also had to transfer phone calls to different departments.later when we went through the mail. they were requests for reports. i searched the reports, printed them out and stapled it. then i put it into an envelope and taped it close. i then had to make a couple faxes to the insurance companies. after that i went to mail the letters and reports.

When I came in today lindsey brought me to the records department. I got in at 8:00. In the morning it was slow and there was not much to do. One of the clerks signed me on the computer at my desk so that I could see the records and reports. After that I met the sergeant and he told me a little about the department. Then I also met a couple of the police officers. I got to see what a state of Rhode Island Uniform crash report looked like. It showed all the persons information. it tells the insurance company's name, policy names, what the make of the car is, seat positions, if the airbags deployed, report number etc. I watched how they attended to customers at the window. The clerks first asked if it was an accident or other. they take the report numbers from the customers and type it into the computer. they they find the report and tell the customer how much it isand they pay for it. I was able to send faxes to the insurance company's. I had to answer phone calls and look through three different systems to try and find the reports. I could of done an incident search, case search, global subject search, or you can look through the crash reporting system by using a report number, date, street location, last name, or registration number. I also learned how to transfer phone calls. I had to write information down on paper for a person that called and we had to call him back. Then I helped the clerks, I went an looked up reports in the computer and printed them out. I put them in an envelope to be mailed to the insurance company's. I then took all the mail to the mailbox. I liked today because I was able to do more then last week and I learned some more about the department.
